Ball State and Mayor Bart continue to flip off IPS
I’m proud of my alma mater and Mayor Peterson as they continue promoting the creation of charter schools in Indiana.
The initial approvals come a week after IPS Superintendent Eugene White called for Peterson and Ball State to temporarily stop creating charter schools because they siphon away IPS students. White hasn’t said how long he would want such a moratorium to remain in effect, but he said it was necessary so the district could stabilize its enrollment.
In response, Peterson’s office and Ball State said they plan to continue issuing charters and that they believe the community is better served when parents have more choices.
Dr. White, it would behoove you to spend a little time thinking about why, exactly, charter schools are siphoning away IPS students at such a rapid clip. The NEA’s interests and those of parents and students don’t necessarily converge. For once Mayor Peterson is 100% correct: The community is better served when parents have an alternative to the public school system. Dr. White, when public schools are as good as charter schools you’ll have nothing to worry about.
